This series, we are shining the spot light on Brighton’s Hanover district. Learn about this colourful, hilly neighbourhood and what it has to offer!
The Hanover district is located to the right of Elm Grove, just up from The Level. The entire area runs up a hill towards Brighton’s Queens Park. Most people will know this area as rows and rows of brightly coloured, Victorian fisherman style cottages tightly packed together. These houses typically range from flat fronted to bay fronted, with two- four stories.

A Short History
The area was first built in 1894 which followed on from the sought after homes in Hanover Crescent (at the bottom of the hill, opposite The Level). The private road is just as exclusive today, with a small crescent of beautiful Grade II listed homes dating back to 1822. The crescent was once home to Sir Rowland Hill, who if you didn’t know introduced the penny postage and penny black stamp as well as being chairman of the London to Brighton Railway Company. The roads at the bottom of Hanover were built first, and then grew up the hill.
A Little About…
A few years ago the area was quite run down and home to a lot of students attending both Brighton and Sussex universities however, the area has seen a lot of redevelopment, with modernised homes, the majority of which have not been turned into apartments so, today it is a very fashionable and popular area to live. Its growing popularity has seen a lovely community form and not to mention the vast amount of pubs in such a small area, there is one on nearly every street! The Constant Service on the corner of Islingword Street have regular live music and are well known for their home made pies! There’s also The Greys Freehouse on the corner of Southover Street and Hanover Street who also hold various live gigs and serve fantastic hearty food!

There is a Hanover Community Association with its own community centre and annual Beer Festival, as well as a Hanover Day, which is an annual street party!
This area is ideal for commuters as it’s just a 15 minute walk to Brighton railway station with direct links to London Victoria and London Bridge in an hour. It’s also becoming popular for families who are close to various local schools- St Lukes Junior & Infants School, Elm Grove Primary and Queen’s Park Primary School.
Hanover is close to many local shops and amenities on London Road and Lewes Road however, there is a small number of locally owned cafe’s and shops dotted around Hanover. For any supplies, pop by Hilly Laine, this isn’t just a corner shop though, it sells whole foods, fresh fruit and veg, baked goods and household products. If you fancy a fish and chip dinner you have a few to choose from, we like Sea Breeze on Southover Street.
