We are sure you will be out and about this summer enjoying the glorious weather. Sometimes it’s easy to run out of ideas for ‘things to do’, so we thought visiting some beautiful gardens would be a lovely day out!
The Secret Garden, Brighton
The Secret Garden originally belonged to no 32 Sussex Square which was bought by its first owner, Lawrence Peel, younger brother of the Prime Minister, in 1830. Several of the grand houses in the square had extensive gardens, each of which was accessed through a tunnel leading from the appropriate house.
The Secret Garden is now the only remaining one of these. It is ‘secret’ because it is an oasis, a delightful walled garden hidden from view, in the midst of suburban Kemp Town. Originally a ‘pleasure garden’, it led to a kitchen garden beyond.
The Hannah Peschar Sculpture Garden, Ockley
Broadleaved plants and mature trees support, frame and enhance a changing collection of contemporary sculpture in this stunning garden. The Sculpture Garden was the brainchild of owner and original curator Hannah Peschar nearly 40 years ago, and has grown from a handful of sculptures to around 200 pieces exhibited every summer.
The garden has been redesigned and replanted by award-winning landscape designer Anthony Paul, who has introduced many large-leaved plants in bold groups, tall grasses and created 3 new ponds. Situated in a rural location near Dorking.
Sussex Prairie Garden, Henfield
Sussex Prairie Garden opened to the public in 2009, just one year after planting. They are Britain’s largest “Prairie,” or “Naturalistic,” garden, with eight acres of stunning garden to roam around.
Unlike most gardens of a comparable size, there’s no castle or stately home! It was designed and planted by Paul and Pauline McBride on Pauline’s family farm in West Sussex.
Leonardslee Lake & Gardens, Lower Beeding
Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens opened its doors after a closure of nine years, this magnificent Grade I listed garden was nearly lost forever and has been the subject of the largest garden restoration in England and possibly Europe.
These spectacular and ancient gardens are now open for the public to enjoy once again. Many people in the local area have fond memories of their visits and life around these gardens. Find Leornadlsee a 10 minute drive from Horsham.
The Sculpture Park, Farnham
The Sculpture Park is Britain’s most eclectic & atmospheric sculpture exhibition, and has been delighting those who discover it for over 15 years. There are over 300 renowned and emerging artists showcasing over 650 modern and contemporary sculptures. Primarily situated outdoors, over a 2 mile woodland trail. There is also a smaller indoor gallery on-site at the park with more work available to view.
The site is situated within ten acres of stunning arboretum and wildlife inhabited water gardens which have been developed with a series of landscaping projects and the introduction of thousands of new plants, bulbs and specimen trees. Taking advantage of the natural contours of the rolling Surrey Hills has resulted in the perfect haven for the display of sculpture.
We would love to hear if you end up visiting any of these beautiful gardens!
